The Commandments

When Jesus preached the Gospel, he taught the Commandments of God that give eternal life. Below are some passages where Jesus explains which commandments are the greatest and which commandments, when kept, bring eternal life.

The Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:34-40

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment.

39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Eternal Life

Matthew 19:16-19

16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”

18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Keep the Commandments

Proverbs 3:1

"My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,"

If we keep God's commandments, we are walking in His Will and His Righteousness in fulfillment of the law. In keeping the commandments, we have eternal life.

The Lord's Prayer

In the Gospels, Lord Jesus offers us eternal life and forgiveness through the combination of His sacrifice on the cross and our repentance through prayer. Jesus taught us to repent by praying The Lord's Prayer which is shown in the verses below:

Our Father

Matthew 6:7-15

7 “And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 Pray then like this:

Our Father who is in heaven,

Hallowed be your name.

10 Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread;

12 And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us;

13 And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Yours is The Kingdom and The Power and The Glory, forever and ever, Amen.

14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;

15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

Therefore, it is always in our best interest to forgive others, so that we will be forgiven by God. Repentance through The Lord's Prayer offers us that forgiveness every time we pray it. It also reminds us to do God's will and focus on His purpose for us in our lives. The Lord's prayer is a great mercy for all of us and the promise of forgiveness and eternal life through faith in God, Jesus Christ and repentance.
